Before an intimate crowd of hundreds, Mayer professed his love for Britannia’s greatest SUV, rocked the house with hits.

The middle of November in Los Angeles means one thing: the Los Angeles Auto Show. Held on the floor of the Los Angeles Convention Center, the show is the automakers’ last big bash before heading off to Tokyo to close out the major international auto show season.

Of course, the L.A. Auto Show isn’t just about the new cars or big, flashy displays. There are also lots of parties thrown by the automakers to draw in those lucky enough to be invited. In fact, we were lucky enough to be invited to Land Rover’s new Defender debut gathering at the Rolling Greens Nursery Home and Garden in downtown L.A.’s Arts District, where none other than John Mayer performed before an intimate crowd of hundreds.

Known for such hits as “Your Body is a Wonderland,” “Bigger Than My Body,” and “No Such Thing,” Mayer was not just at Rolling Greens to rock the house. He’s a huge fan of the Defender, too, owning at least two of them, including the blue one above, which was parked outside the nursery.

Once the opening introductions were over, Mayer strapped on his acoustic guitar to knock out three of his hits next to the new Defender. While “Your Body is a Wonderland” was not among them (which would have been appropriate in this case), he knocked out “Carry Me Away,” “New Light,” and “Waiting on the World to Change.”

As Mayer was serenading the private party, we spotted more than a few guests peeping out a fancy Defender art piece assembled entirely out of LEGO. We were so enamored by the piece — like everyone else — we forgot to capture a few photos for ourselves to share with you. Then again, it’s not often to be in the moment these days, everyone preferring to snap-stagram their lives for the world to see.

We did get a few photos of the new Defenders, though. The Defender 90 and 110 (two- and four-door, respectively) will make its festival debut in January, at the 4xFAR Festival in Coachella Valley, California January 18 and 19. Mayer isn’t on the bill as of this writing, but Young the Giant and Sofi Tukker will be there to bring down the house that Coachella built.

Aside from Mayer, there were a few more stars attending the party, including the black Defender from the upcoming James Bond film, 2020’s No Time to Die. Still covered in dirt from filming, everyone who wanted could have their photo taken with it.

Among the human stars, former Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, Rag & Bone CEO Marcus Wainwright, and actor Wilmer Valderrama were there to celebrate the new Defender, which will be a part of a campaign with Mayer in 2020, where all can follow them on their adventures in America’s national parks.
